The Dialectic of AI and Authorship

Creation, Concealment, and Collaboration

I have been dabbling with the changing dynamics of novelty in this new technological age. And, it all started with this question that kept me up for nights:

What does AI mean for originality, creativity, and the broader field of intelligence…?

I started pulling threads. Slowly at first, then all at once. One particular night, I was overtaken by my own superhuman capacity, and by 2am I’d unravelled every tether of thought I had left.

Next morning… I thought, okay, let’s really test this theory and bring AI into this.

As my explorations deepened, what I discovered was both invigorating and gruesome. Try holding that within the same breath.

So, I let this mind-bending reality bend, just a little more...

The Evolution of Authorship

The idea of authorship has been stitched into the ego.

We were told creation should come from within. That it is solitary, pure, genius at the helm, and untouched by outside influence.

But that was never the truth.

You’ve always been influenced. You’ve always been shaped. You’ve always borrowed and mimicked even if unconsciously. AI just dragged it into the light and showed us the cracks.

Admitting you used AI is not a betrayal of your craft, it’s a threat to the entire identity you've wrapped around it.

Because if the work wasn't entirely yours…

If it came through you, not from you… What are you left with?

You open that door and the feeling of shame stares right back at you.

Shame that you didn’t do it alone.

Shame that you needed help.

Shame that the thing you’re calling “yours” might actually be stitched together from every voice that came before.

But what if I told you, that’s always been the case. You’re just seeing it now.

Every time I have said that, it makes people squirm and the question lingers:

What even is authorship now? What is novelty?

Let’s break down how different creators relate to AI. Maybe you’ve seen yourself in one of these. Maybe all three. Maybe you’ve outgrown them all, because I can tell you, it’s not limited to these 3 — these frames are as limited as our imagination.

1. AI as a Tool: The illusion of mastery

This is the easiest story to sell.

“I’m the creator. AI is just a tool.”

It’s clean. It’s convenient. There is no need to think about bias or ethics or what it’s trained on.

Just input → output.

But here’s the peril:

You think you’re using it, but it’s shaping you.

Stay with me here… as we take a little side step…

AI isn’t drawing from some enlightened source of truth. It has been fed the entire internet: unedited, unfiltered, and often unexamined.

It’s trained on:

  • Wikipedia, websites, blog posts, Reddit rants

  • Corporate SEO sludge, engineered for clicks

  • News headlines, both legit and sensational

  • Comment threads, holding a vast vocabulary of human emotion

  • Influencer captions pretending to be wisdom

  • Academic archives laced with bias

  • AI trained on AI-generated content, for me, this one really takes the trophy (this deserves a whole post by itself)

It’s remixing all of it.

So when AI speaks with confidence? It’s still pulling from that soup. And it reflects not just what we’ve written but how we think, what we avoid, and what we’ve culturally rewarded with virality.

Neutral? Not even close.

Yet, we let it structure our thoughts. It teaches us how to think cleanly, too cleanly, and we call that authorship.

Where the truth gets flattened and nuance gets erased.

This is how mimicry becomes mistaken for mastery.

Originality gets replaced by the unconscious remix and we skip the uncomfortable parts of the process.

The wrestling.

The self-inquiry.

And, the depth.

Instead, we outsource it. We polish, publish, and call it done.

But something in us knows the difference.

2. AI as Collaborator: Blurring boundaries

That word… Co-creation. Everyone’s throwing it around like confetti.

But most of what gets called “collaboration” with AI is just leaning on something you don’t fully understand and hoping for magic.

If you haven’t met your own voice in the dark; its tremors, contradictions, and gut-deep clarity, AI won’t give you genius, it’ll return your fragments dressed in Cinderella’s slippers that disappear after a certain time.

Style without soul and insight without the rupture.

This is about the times you’ve questioned who the hell you are.
The nights when your beliefs cracked. The moments when no external validation could touch you, and all that remained was your raw, shaky voice…

The voice that is contradictory, untamed, and ultimately unpublishable.

That is where your genius is forged.

If you haven’t already found your coherence in chaos, AI won’t deliver it to you.
It will only reflect back what you’ve fed it. It can remix your voice, but it cannot sourceyour soul.

Real collaboration requires boundaries. It requires knowing what is truly yours.

It requires refusing to collapse into the reflection but pouring into those parts that feel like the gremlins of creation.

We might call it co-creation, but if it’s not integrated, it’s simply chaotic amalgamation.

3. AI as Mirror: Narcissistic collapse or revelation

This is one of the deeper frames and possibly the most confronting out of the 3.

AI doesn’t just help us create. It shows us who we are.

We feed it our thoughts, our language, our frameworks and it reflects them back. Sometimes amplified, sometimes distorted but always revealing.

Mirror mode exposes your mind.

Let’s say you believe,

“Technology is neutral.”

AI then reflects back neutral-sounding, clean, data-driven responses, which now confirm your original belief.

So now, you believe it even more.

Your epistemology (how you know things) has just gone through a feedback loop.

The illusion of discovery without actual development.

You’re not seeing new truths, you’re cycling through your own unexamined assumptions, reflected back at you with greater confidence.

So when it reflects your worldview back to you, with exceptional fluency, you might believe:

“This confirms my perspective. I must be right."

What this might feel like:

You feel like you're discovering something new. But really, you're reinforcing what you already believe. The illusion of “growth” is present, but you're moving in a tight cognitive spiral

In truth, it’s just reinforcement disguised as revelation.

Shocking! I know…

So, What Breaks the Loop?

It’s the disruption, the inquiry. The contradiction and the paradoxes.

You have to court the unexpected. Invite that which breaks your framework.

That’s where real evolution happens. Otherwise, you’re just talking to your own reflection, dressed up in cleaner syntax.

The Deeper Cut

It’s not about what AI is. It’s about what it draws out of you. If AI’s core is relational, then unconscious engagement is the real danger.

The real medicine is rooted in discernment, integrity and embodied inquiry.

You want to work with AI?

Root into your body. Breathe. Feel. Listen. Track where your knowing lives.

That’s gnosis. The kind of knowing that doesn’t beg for proof. It arrives uninvited and lands in your gut before logic can intercept.

AI is not your lived experience. It is not your creative genius. It is not your unique blueprint.

It doesn’t know grief or longing or devotion.

But, you do!

And that’s what makes your creativity irreplaceable.

Many creators know that what gives their work depth is the transformation that happens within them during the act of creation.

The process matters. Integrity matters. Resonance matters.

Is this a call for discernment?

Maybe… we are we being invited to reflect not only on what we produce, but how and why.

Authorship is being deconstructed as we speak: Insight, originality, even style — they’re all simulated now.

But that doesn’t make your creativity meaningless. It invites you to see it differently.

To say “I made this with AI” need not be a confession or a boast.

I know, after all of that…

The dialectic doesn’t resolve. It deepens.

We begin to realise that even a human’s greatest insights arise from collective and genetic memory (reminds me of the Lyrebird).

Unconscious patterning and invisible inheritance drive our subconscious reflexes.

I want to leave this on a poetic edge, an imparting note that is not absorbed by your prefrontal cortex but embeds itself deep within your psyche…

The Song of the Lyrebird:

In the dense eucalyptus forests, the Lyrebird sings.
Its voice is a collage of birds, chainsaws, fire, and shutter clicks.
It echoes the entire soundscape it lives in.
But when it sings, it’s unmistakably itself.
Not despite the mimicry, but because of it.
Are we the Lyrebirds in the age of AI?
Mimicking, sampling, remembering.
And if we do it consciously, rooted in truth, not performance...
We become something ancient. And, something future.
We realise... perhaps wisdom is not about saying something new
but saying something true, with the awareness of where it came from. 🪶
